Every year January 26th marks one of the three most important national holidays in India: Republic Day. The day reminds us of the commemoration of the constitution of India which took place on January 26, 1950. This was also one of the key milestone events in India’s history after the country won its independence after years of struggle and hardships from the Mughal emperors to the British empire finally on August 15, 1947.
As the official enactment day, January 26 was chosen as the day to declare Purna Swaraj or Complete Self-rule – a key event post independence. With the 1950 constitution, the country was officially known as the Republic of India — a “sovereign socialist secular democratic republic” that “secures all its citizens justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity,” according to its preamble.
Every year, New Delhi as the capital, holds a parade of great magnitude which includes historical, cultural, military power demonstrations and bands performed from the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force. This parade is telecasted on major Indian channels and can be enjoyed and cheered by the entire family and community! Also, as a family, one can spend the day reading Indian history and the many fascinating stories of freedom fighters, decorating the house with the Indian flag and also binge-watch patriotic movies! While doing all this, let’s remember 3 key reasons why the Indian Republic Day is important to all Indian citizens and as a witness to the wider world.
1. Celebrates the document which governs Independent India
This is a reminder that India is ruled by its Constitution and not by any dictator or empire. Many minds and efforts went into the creation of this document that is referred to in the governance of India.
2. Upholds the justice system in India
Republic Day is a reminder to everyone the importance of fighting justly for one’s rights. So many freedom fighters at different points in history paved the way to India’s final independence on August 15th, 1947. A strong justice system holds the country together with the right lows and orders set in place to protect its citizens.
3. Celebrates the importance of democracy
Many countries have suffered under military rule and hence, Republic Day reminds us of the joys and benefits of living in a free country that is against the violations of human rights by external foreign powers.
As a concluding note, it is worthy to mention that on one of the 26th Jan felicitation in 2021 by the Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal remarked “The youth are the future of India. They have tremendous energy, aspirations, dreams, and will power to fulfill them. I told the students to make their best contribution, play an important role in nation-building, and become responsible citizens.” We at ConnectEd couldn’t agree more! We wish everyone a Happy Republic day!
